The Dry Waste Collection Centre (DWCC) in ward 177, JP Nagar, was set on fire on 20th May 2023.

The Dry Waste Collection Centre (DWCC) in ward 177, JP Nagar (India), was set on fire on 20th May 2023. The centre is run by Kumuda, a former waste picker who put her own money into the centre to run dry waste collection for the ward’s residents and with the BBMP’s support.

With the loss of the centre, is also the loss of Kumuda’s stock of collected recyclable materials, the self-help group’s space of work, and the dry waste processing for the residents of JP Nagar Ward 177. Kumuda and her team are resilient. The workers have banded together and are still collecting waste for the residents to have a clean ward! But without a space to sort and store the material, this isn’t sustainable.

Kumuda’s entire centre will need to be rebuilt and her livelihood and the livelihoods of her workers need to be supported during this time. We salute her persistence and strength to keep working after this devastating blow.

Hasiru Dala is collecting funds to help Kumuda rebuild the centre, compensate for her lost material and months where she has not been paid by the BBMP, clean up and move out all the debris, and continue work in the ward, providing a waste management service for her residents and supporters.

If you donate to our campaign, you will receive regular updates on the work we do to support Kumuda. Your donations will receive an 80G certificate.
